Flooding in Whaler’s Bay is most common between November and February, when sustained rain saturates soils and stream levels rise quickly. Low-lying streets near creek crossings and undersized private culverts are the areas most frequently affected.

The city monitors stream gauges throughout the storm season and pre-positions crews ahead of forecast heavy rain.

If flooding is forecast or occurring

  1. Never drive or walk through standing water. Six inches of moving water can knock an adult down.
  2. Move vehicles and valuables out of low-lying areas before storms arrive.
  3. Keep storm drains near your property clear of leaves and debris.
  4. Sandbags are available at the Utilities operations yard during declared flood events.
  5. Report street flooding to Utilities; call 911 for immediate life-safety emergencies.
